Tim Hodge’s passion for Civil War history began with a childhood trip to Gettysburg and was reignited years later when he discovered Major Martin Robinson Delany, the first African American field officer commissioned by President Lincoln. Inspired by Delany’s extraordinary life, Hodge also studied and began portraying other notable Black Civil War figures such as Robert Smalls and Sgt. William Harvey Carney. He has presented these portrayals at museums, roundtables, schools, and parades across the country and, as a member of The Confederation of Union Generals, now enjoys retirement while educating the public about the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans in the Civil War.
