A Virtual Walk & Dinner Talk with architect Fanny Hoffmann-Loss

This evening is for anyone interested in cities, urban development and transformation, in exploring how urbanisation becomes globalised, and discussing how these processes also shape Berlin and cities worldwide. And, last but not least, it’s for all Shanghai lovers, or anyone curious about this metropolis, the 3rd largest city in the world!

• Visual keynote presentation and talk by Fanny Hoffmann-Loss, an architect with a work experience of 20 years in Shanghai (gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects).

• Seated dinner table with Shanghainese home-style dishes & Shanghai-inspired brews

• Fanny Hoffmann-Loss studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin and Tongji University in Shanghai in the 1990s. Driven by a strong interest in China, she also studied Mandarin at the Beijing Language Institute in 1993 and pursued Sinology at the Free University of Berlin. Since 2006, she has been working for gmp Architects (von Gerkan, Marg and Partners) in Shanghai, where she holds the position of Associate Director. As a member of the think tank Shanghai Flaneur, she has been leading study tours and urban walks for architecture professionals, businesspeople, politicians, and academics for over 15 years.

• , an artist and cultural manager originally from Shanghai, has long been involved in fostering musical and artistic connections. Having grown up at The House of Blues & Jazz, she continues to create spaces where music, art, and culture come together.
• Katja & Jan, a cultural mediator and a photographer, called Shanghai home for 16 years. After relocating to Berlin, they realized their dream of creating a space for cross-cultural encounters by founding , an inspiring venue in a former furniture factory in Berlin-Weißensee.

The idea for Berlin Shanghai Night first came to life in 2022, in the middle of the pandemic, a time when many of us longed for connection, for home, and for shared culture. The plan was to make it a recurring event, but like many dreams, it was paused by global uncertainties. In March, 2025, we relaunched the ''Berlin Shanghai Night''.

Berlin Shanghai Night is a social gathering that brings together people connected not only to Shanghai, but also to China at large—those who have lived there, worked there, loved it, missed it, or are simply curious to explore its vibrant soul.

It’s a night to celebrate memories, encounters, and the ongoing cultural dialogue between Berlin and China. Through food, music, and conversation, we aim to (re)create the energy of Shanghai—a city where tradition meets modernity and where cultures converge effortlessly.

Berlin Shanghai Night is not only about looking back; it's about reimagining the Shanghai spirit as something alive, evolving, and very much present—right here in Berlin.
