About this Event

PLEASE NOTE: We are an approved provider of CE Credits for clinical psychologists in the state of New York. At this time we cannot provide CE credits to any other form of mental health professional. However, if you are not a licensed doctoral level clinician in the state of New York you can still attend this course out of interest by purchasing a "General Admission" ticket.

Topic: This course covers the topic of Interracial & Multicultural Couples Therapy, explores the specific issues that arise between partners of different races and cultures and identifies helpful interventions to be applied to treating this specific population.

Course Description: This course addresses the growing need for therapists to expand their approach to supporting couples who struggle with navigating the challenges that come with differences in race and culture. This 120-minute course consists of lecture and discussion on the topic of treating multicultural and interracial couples with an integrative approach to couples therapy. Common issues that diverse couples face will be identified and an integrative approach to conceptualizing these issues will be addressed. This course will emphasize the utility of applying updated models of racial and cultural identity development to the therapists’ and each partner’s engagement in couples therapy.

Location, Date, & Time: Virtual via Zoom, Thursday, May 15th, 2025 from 1:00pm-3:00pm*

*Note: if you are unable to join us live, you can obtain your CE credit via self study by purchasing a "Self Study" ticket. You will receive a video recording to watch and quiz to complete after the event.

Teaching Methods: This educational activity will include a research-informed lecture portion, discussion time and de-identified case presentations to stimulate discussion and application of educational material.

Learning Objectives: By attending this course, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify common issues and complaints in interracial and multicultural relationships couples work
  2. Gain exposure to an integrated conceptualization of some of these issues including relational, psychodynamic, and CBT theoretical orientations
  3. Receive recommendations for interventions and tailored questions for intake interviews
  4. Begin to explore how the therapist’s cultural beliefs about relationships might contribute to and impact the work
  5. Learn how to apply models of racial and cultural development to  couples treatment

Costs, Refunds, and Cancellation Policies: The fee for this course will be $50 for CE credits and $40 for general interest. Refunds will be provided for cancellations made in writing up to 3 business days prior to the start of the event.

Length of Course in Contact Hours: 120 min/2hours (2 CE Units)

Presenter: Nadia Nieves, Ph.D.

Qualifications: Dr. Nieves is a New York and New Jersey licensed Clinical Psychologist, Couples Therapy Specialist and Postdoctoral Program Director at Therapists of New York, a group private practice in Manhattan, New York. In clinical practice, Dr. Nieves has treated couples of many races and cultural backgrounds. She is passionate about supporting couples in understanding and celebrating their differences. Her research experience focused on trauma, dissociation, dyadic attunement and interpersonal synchrony between romantic partners. Dr. Nieves gained teaching experience at the college level in subjects including Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Social Neuroscience. She received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from The New School in 2019. She also teaches a doctorate-level course in Couples Therapy at The New School.
