Dido & Aeneas is the oldest opera in English that is regularly performed, and was first presented near the end of a century of violence, revolution, and religious upheaval. Purcell’s tuneful music, by turns comic, charming, touching and deeply emotional, underpins a drama of personal relationships, psychological truth, political duties, and the supernatural.
