What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with some superb Irish traditional music? On Sunday, March 15, Portlanders Will Woodson (uilleann pipes & flute) and Cait Finley (fiddle), will be joined by Cork native and Boston resident Diarmuid Ó Meachair (button accordion), at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk for what promises to be an exceptional concert. All three are master musicians with deep knowledge of Irish tradition. The concert takes place from 3:00-5:00 pm in the
museum’s Dane Street Program Center. The Brick Store is located at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk, adjacent to the Kennebunk Town Hall.
Will Woodson and Cait Finley play traditional Irish music that’s grounded in the textures and rhythms of the rich Irish-American soundscape of the 1920s and 30s. With roots in the living Irish musical cultures of Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia, and a tremendous admiration for the first generation of recorded Irish musicians, the duo conjures up the sounds of the dance halls, vaudeville theaters, and house sessions central to Irish-American music from the first half of the twentieth century.
In 2019, the two recorded their debut album, “The Glory Reel,” with box player and piano accompanist Chris “Junior” Stevens. Writer Dan Neely of the Irish Echo called the release “a fabulous album from three of Irish America’s finest.” During the pandemic years, the two made “The Phonograph Project,” a Patreon-supported series examining classic recordings of traditional Irish music made in New York City in the 1920s and 30s.
Diarmuid Ó Meachair is a traditional Irish accordion and melodeon player, as well as a highly regarded sean-nós (old-style) singer. A native Irish speaker originally from Cúil Aodha, Co. Cork in Ireland, he is currently living in Boston. Prior to moving to the states, he taught Irish traditional music at University College Cork, work he is continuing at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
While still in Ireland, Diarmuid enjoyed considerable success in competitions for both his singing and his playing. His accomplishments include winning the 2016 senior All Ireland melodeon title at the Fleadh in Ennis at the age of nineteen. In 2022, he received the prestigious Young Musician of the Year award from TG4, the Irish language public broadcasting service. He has also been nominated for three awards folk awards from RTÉ, Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster: Best Instrumentalist (2023 & 2024), and Best Emerging Artist (2023). He has released four solo albums.
In 2023, he was commissioned by The John Dwyer Festival and the National Arts Council of Ireland to compose a suite a music in memory of the great Dwyer family from Beara. As a soloist, Diarmuid has been invited to teach at multiple festivals in Ireland, Europe and the US. In 2023 he was invited by the legendary Frankie Gavin to join his group Dé Dannan.
