Dianic witchcraft emerged in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s – a creative, improvisational tradition with no central leadership, no hierarchy, no gods, and no men.
In this dialogue with Sam Webster, Linda Rosewood reflects on discovering Dianic magic as a young feminist seeking a women-centred spirituality. They will trace its early development through Zsuzanna Budapest and its spread through women’s circles, recalling her own experience of forming a coven. They will explore the influences on Dianic Wicca and how it influenced other traditions, like the Radial Faeries. The Dianic worldview has a lasting value, one that can be easily gained now. As the interview takes place on the publication of Rosewood’s debut novel A Circle Outside, they will discuss the appearance of real magic in literature, and the ethics of depicting private ritual in public works of art.
Your Bio: Linda Rosewood is a writer and poet. Her new novel, A Circle Outside, draws from her experiences as a Dianic witch in the 1980s, when feminism met imagination and women made magic. She currently lives in Ireland but spent most of her life in Santa Cruz.
