What’s up Clix community!! Man, do we have something exciting for you guys. As many of you are well aware of, within the Heroclix landscape, there are usually two types of groups that play this game. “Competitive” and “Casual”. We as Heroclix players usually dabble in both areas, while some heavily favor one side or the other. Myself (Joe Harrison, 2025 National Champion and Championclix Open Champion), Dylan Kassebaum (2024 Heroclix Worlds Champion), and Chris Gordon (The Comic Dimension, NC founder/owner) wanted to come up with a format that appeals to both sides of this game we all love dearly and want to see grow. Chris initially sparked this flame of bringing Heroclix back to the basic, barebones fundamentals about why we fell in love with this game. Awesome super-heroes with epic abilities, meeting in the middle of the map to fight it out in a face off to the dea…KO. After Chris and I got the ball rolling, Dylan and I started test play, giving our insight on how we think that this format could be a mainstay in the game of Heroclix if executed properly. Some of our main goals in DIAMOND Format are:
I. Appeal to the new player base **while also** keeping many of the intricate, creative, and awesome details that you see in high level competitive play.
II. Remove/limit things from the game for casual/competitive players alike that bog down the game, make it extremely (and excessively in some cases) intricate, and frustrating (One-Shots, 7 equipments on main force, SIDELINE ACTIVES dominating the game, etc.). While we understand many of these things appeal to the player base, for others, it makes them hesitant about learning the game because they can’t just focus on the fundamentals without having hundreds of dollars worth of non-character game elements to even begin to contend with the average competitive Heroclix player.
III. We want wins to be more DEFINITIVE. This does not mean that every game in Diamond Format will be a 300-X game. But after discussion, we do believe that this will speed the game up HEAVILY, while also being able to play ALL rarities, ALL main force figures that we know and love, and ALL while having a blast!! In this format, we want 10 minute turns, and 2-3 turn games to be almost non-existent. Of course, with every format, there are exceptions and extenuating circumstances. But we will try our best to keep the games ran smooth, fast, and most of all FUN!
IV. What we are NOT trying to say by starting this format. We are not saying that things like One-Shots, Avatars, SIDELINE ACTIVE, etc. are inherently bad or negative game elements. What we ARE trying to say is that all of the “extra” stuff in this amazing game is not what made Heroclix the game that it is. We all love Heroclix and we agree with so many of the things that Wizkids has done to listen to it’s player base and keep this game moving in a positive direction. But what made Heroclix a top-tier tabletop experience is the characters we know and love, fighting it out in a simple and straightforward way. Our goal is to stimulate creativity, attract new players, and excite current players!! As the format evolves, we will strive to make it just like a Diamond: SHINY, YET SIMPLE. STRAIGHTFORWARD, YET BEAUTIFUL.
Rule 1 – Only Clix (Characters) Allowed…for the most part.
For the rules pertaining to the composition of a force within Diamond Format, we want to be as straightforward as possible. We want to make this format as simple as we can WHILE ALSO including elements that new players will need to familiarize themselves with (Special Objects, Equipment, Bystanders, etc.)
1. For this rule, we have decided that Characters are defined specifically as:
a. Game elements that have a dial.
b. Bystanders with printed powers/stats showing on “dial”
2. OBJECTS/EQUIPMENT
a. We will allow a combination of THREE Special Objects per force. This includes but is not limited to Effect Terrain (Heart-Shaped Herb, Phone Booth, etc.)
i. For example, you could use a Heart-Shaped Herb, Phone Booth, and Longsword on your force. The three special objects can be a combination of any type.
ii. For equipment, ALL equipped characters on a force during force construction must have a qualifying Name/Keyword for the equipment it is assigned, OR be able to start the game with equipment without paying the cost from a trait/ability (Ultra Chase Collector, King Arthur, Fantomex, etc.)
3. MAPS
Maps will follow the same standard ruling as in 300 Modern Age.
Rule 2 – No SIDELINE ACTIVE Allowed
1. The intent behind this rule is to keep game state flowing seamlessly. It is also to keep the players from having to load the sideline every game with expensive game elements. This rule will not ban pieces that have SIDELINE ACTIVE printed on their character card. It will however, keep any SIDELINE ACTIVE ability from being used. This rule when starting this format will be very rigid and strict, and it’s for the health of the format! Future discussion will be involved concerning pieces like Ex. mot041b Reverse-Flash that is a piece that can come off the sideline, is not a “One-Shot”, and is still technically a traditional Heroclix piece. But at the current time, all SIDELINE ACTIVE is banned in this format.
Rule 3 – Highlander
1. This was an extremely important rule we wanted to include for this format as it will keep certain pieces in check (3 Hadari Yaos at 60 points, etc.), and encourage creative builds. Similar to how PULP format is ran, while at the same time will play out very different in Diamond Format.
Rule 4 – Generated Game Elements
1. For Diamond Format we do not want to limit or diminish generation of game elements related to character abilities (Equipment generation, character generation, object generation, etc.). With that being said, when a rule pertains to game elements generated from outside of the game, that element will be legal, and will bypass other Diamond Format rules associated with said element.
a. Example of this. Spv051 Spider-Man generates an infinity gauntlet equipment when he starts the game. This would not violate the equipment rules of Diamond format, because Spider-Man did not have the infinity gauntlet equipped during force construction. Same logic would follow with character generation and object generation.
Rule 5 – Restricted List and Ban List
1. The restricted list will follow the exact same concept as Silver Age. A force may contain ONE restricted figure, and no more. Since this format is characters only, we thought it conducive to the Diamond environment to limit the amount of insanely strong pieces that aren’t dependent on strong combinations, equipment or team composition to be extremely efficient/effective. This will be a fluid list and Chris, myself and Dylan may change the list at our discretion. Although, with that being said, we do not want an overpacked list that takes unnecessary amounts of pieces and puts them in a restricted slot. We want you to be able to play powerful pieces, but we also want to encourage creativity and a fresh environment from typical 300 modern meta! Banned list will include any character not legal in Diamond Format.
2. The Diamond Format Restricted List includes:
a. cltr046 The Collector
b. dwx043b Colossus
c. 047b Elsa Bloodstone
d. dicnDCX-025 Butterfly
3. The Diamond Format Ban List includes:
a. wbicnWBX1-001 Betelgeuse
4. We want to hear community feedback for every part of this format, especially the reasoning behind our restricted picks! We will take all community input into consideration! For the single-base characters with dials on this list, it should be fairly self evident. Hyper effective pieces that could potentially dominate the format if not on the restricted list. For all bystanders that are added to this list, our intent is to keep teams from being loaded down with hard to acquire bystanders.
This format will include but is not limited to:
300 Modern Age - Diamond (Only Modern Age elements are legal)
400 Silver Age - Diamond (All legal/restricted/banned) pieces in Silver Age Diamond will follow the same rulings as regular 400 Silver Age, with additions to those lists within our format. (ex. Mad Jim Jaspers is still banned in 400 Silver Age - Diamond
While we get the ball rolling and try to grow the Diamond scene, we will be running most, if not all events at the start of this format as 300 Modern Age Diamond.
Lastly, we would love for you all to know how much we love this game and wish to see it thrive. We did not create this format to squash competitive play, stifle creative team composition, or simply “go against the grain”. We have all either played or are currently involved in competitive Heroclix in some form or fashion either as judges or players. And as players of this game, we are EXTREMELY excited about how this format will be ran. Until then, go do some Clix’in!
