Dialogues on Panafrica: Symposium

Free and open to the public, the symposium Dialogues on Panafrica gathers an international group of artists, academics, and curators in dynamic conversations about the history and future of Pan-Africanism. Featuring keynote lectures, roundtable discussions, and artist presentations, this symposium is organized on the occasion of the exhibition Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, on view at the Art Institute of Chicago until March 30, 2025. This day-long symposium will address a range of topics such as the circulation and evolution of Pan-African aesthetics since the late nineteenth century, exhibitions as platforms for advancing Pan-Africanist ideals, the role of artists and institutions in fostering solidarity, and discussion of how Pan-Africanist histories can inspire solutions to global challenges. Participants include Antawan I. Byrd, Louis Chude-Sokei, Huey Copeland, Elvira Dyangani-Ose, Kodwo Eshun, Adom Getachew, Koyo Kouoh, Hélio Menezes, Marilyn Nance, Ebony Patterson, Dieter Roelstraete, Moses Serubiri, Krista Thompson, Ivy Wilson, Leslie Wilson, Matthew Witkovsky, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.
