Diabetes & Disordered Eating - Progress and Understanding
Join us in person or online on Thursday June 18th for a relaxed and insightful event exploring the connections between diabetes and disordered eating and the excellent developments in care . Mary Wood and Aisling Piggott are expert specialist dietitians and will be boosting confidence and understanding in a very gentle and friendly atmosphere.
It's unsurprising that some people with diabetes develop a tricky relationship with food; it's very hard to eat without being aware of if or how it will affect blood sugar levels. Friends and family may check if particular foods are "allowed"; we've all heard "should you be eating that"?
The focus on diet, sugars and weight can make it difficult to relax to notice flavours or consider nutrition when thinking about calories and carbs. This can be relentless and very difficult to manage, possibly particularly for people on complex Medic*tion regimes or insulin.
Mary and Aisling very much appreciate this complexity and how it can affect our enjoyment or simple appreciation of meals and snacks, and both have made significant steps to change and offer better, suitable services.
On June 18th we’ll find out what can cause it and hear about the research, and what led to it being recognised, how services have adapted and ways to overcome it. Whether you're affected personally or just curious, come along and learn with us!
EXTRA:
Food is essential for survival and means so much more! For people with diabetes, it can be one of the most crucial, complicated, frustrating and exhausting aspects of living with the condition. We need to be vigilant and careful around food to help manage our blood sugar levels which can detract from relaxing and enjoying it, and surprising blood sugar readings can lead us to go over and over what we might or might not have eaten; it's not too difficult to appreciate how for some people this hyper awareness can progress to real problems in our relationship with food, not helped at all by the need to manage and control our weight to reduce the extra risks associated with diabetes.
