“Classic Michigan Food and Drinks: The Stories Behind the Brands” lecture with Authors Gail Offen and Jon MilanDid you know the Ritz Cracker was invented in Jackson? Kowalski invented Hunter Sausage? Join authors Gail Offen and Jon Milan as they explore the history and stories behind all of these and many, many more. Their latest book, “Classic Michigan Food and Drinks: The Stories Behind The Brands,” (History Press, 2024) is full of amazing stories and photos about the many Michigan food and drink brands we know and love.
Sure, Michigan invented ready-to-eat cereal (Kellogg's) and baby food (Gerber) --but there are many stories most Michiganders don't know, such as Germack was the first company in America to import pistachios, Better Made uses Michigan potatoes, frozen garlic bread was invented in Grand Rapids and we are the pickle-growing capital of the US. Join the pair as they “dish” on Michigan chocolate, jams, potato chips, etc--and of course, fudge and pasties. (“We ate waaaay too much fudge in our research”). If you’re a fan of brands like Sanders, Faygo, Vernors, Ryba’s, Guernsey, Jiffy and Vlasic—or have fond memories of brands like Awrey’s and Twin Pines—you’ll eat up this show!
