Design Time: Going Places

Friday 9th August 2024, 11am to 4pm

For children aged 11 to 14 years

We’re going on a trip! Today is the day for an adventure! A journey into the unknown, to discover new lands and meet brilliant new people. A time of learning and discovery. There you are, suitcase in hand, at the gateway to a whole new world - but wait a minute – queues, confusion, tickets – who goes where and what goes there and how do we get to go places in the first place?

Buildings can allow us to enter new places or to set off on fabulous adventures, but these ‘ports’ can also have lots of rules. Is it possible to design a building which is exciting to travel through AND easy to navigate? How do we find our way around, and why are there no chairs when I want to sit down, is that a real plant, and where is my ice cream anyway?

Can boats, trains and planes all go from the same kind of building? Does the kind of transport change the design of the building?

Join us for this voyage of discovery in which we will consider the ways in which we navigate gateways ports and stations, and design transitory spaces which energise and invigorate us on our way to the other side. Participants will consider the ways in which we move through spaces, and the things that help or hinder us on our journeys. They will consider different ways of mapping, sign posting, and how to give good instructions and the difference in scale between a map and a real building. We will develop expanded drawings and collage and work together to build a large-scale port-for-all which is fun to use and easy to navigate.

This creative architecture workshop for children aged 11 to 14 will be run by artist educator Zoe Allen.

Zoe Allen is an artist and educator who makes collage, assemblage, sculpture, and paintings. She uses materials foraged from sites which have particular meanings or memories, re-purposing these to create new conversations. Zoe also has a collaborative practice in which she works with other artists to create large scale installation informed by architectural forms and mechanisms.

About the Workshop Series

Our Design Time (previously Design Day) workshops for ages 11-14 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
