About this Event

Workshop Summary

On Saturday, we’ll go deeper.

Join us for a day devoted to reviving soul manners & celebrating primary satisfactions.

John O'Donohue writes, “When we approach with reverence, great things decide to approach us. Our real life comes to the surface, and its light awakens the concealed beauty in things. When we walk on the earth with reverence, beauty will decide to trust us. The rushed heart and arrogant mind lack the gentleness and patience to enter that embrace.”

In our modern day, this reverence of approach and the manners of the soul have been forgotten.

Instead of approaching life and one another with reverence, with the manners our souls know innately matter, modern humans often approach life with distracted, hurried attention, and an attitude of entitlement. “How much can I get for how little?” The soul understands the necessity for reverence, for gratitude, for connecting with ancestors and future generations, for slowing down and nurturing authentic, non-dominating connection with our inner lives, with our outer world, and with one another.

For thousands of generations, as human beings we were held and nourished by being members of a community that engaged in timeless activities our souls are oriented to expect: gathering around a fire, making music, hearing stories, learning from elders, supporting one another during times of loss and grief, expressing gratitude, making rituals and offerings, singing together, sharing meals and sharing dreams, nurturing the young, gathering seeds and food with reverence and a devotion to the thriving of future generations. Francis Weller calls these activities “primary satisfactions.” When our lives are full of such satisfactions, we feel the true wealth of being human.

Soul manners and primary satisfactions have largely gone missing in the current overculture. We have become a culture focused on the individual self, chasing the secondary satisfactions of rank, privilege, wealth, status, and harmful addictions. This leaves us lonely, stressed, and dissatisfied, as we endlessly consume our beautiful world. Our souls know another way. Let us gather for a day of primary satisfactions and reviving soul manners.

Our enlivening time together will include:

  • gentle and potent embodiment practices
  • remembering the practice of thanksgiving as a primary soul responsibility
  • making music together (even if you think you’re not musical)
  • reading poetry
  • writing
  • praise practice and a beautiful gratitude ritual
  • experiential reconnection with our wider network of kin
  • imaginal practice
  • the joy of primary satisfactions
  • a day of being held in a caring community, rooted in respect and belonging.

Please come in comfortable clothes. Bring journal and pen, water bottle (can refill there), layers in case you get cold or hot, and snacks/light lunch. We always share food together at the break so if you would like to contribute, please do. Or bring what you want for yourself if that is a better fit for you.

About our Workshop Facilitators:

Erin and Carl have been leading groups, individually and together, for many years now. Their work weaves their in-depth embodiment practices, Erin's intuitive facilitation of deep inquiry, soul work and deep ecology, and Carl's joyful practices of group rhythm, music making, and soul work through sound. Together they have facilitated collective grief work with Francis Weller and lead their own yearly grief rituals to heal and cleanse the soul of our community.

Carl Rabke is a Somatic Naturalist, Embodiment teacher, and a tender of soul and living culture. For the last 25 years, he has practiced and taught where the streams of somatics, soul work, and a deep love of this living Earth meet. He is a Feldenkrais Practitioner and Rolfer, and loves to support people in returning to and remembering our natural, inherent intelligence in movement, meditation, ritual, song, rhythm, and community. Carl has studied at Bobby McFerrin’s Circlesongs School and is a Musica do Círculo practitioner. He has studied voice work with George Grant, Judi Vinar, and Zuza Goncalves. He has mentored with Jozef Frucek of Fighting Monkey. Carl has also mentored with and taught alongside Francis Weller. Carl hosts the Embodiment Matters Podcast with his beloved wife, Erin. You can find out more about him here.

Erin Geesaman Rabke is a Somatic Naturalist & Embodiment Mentor; a writer, a mother, a teacher, a group facilitator, and a possibilitarian.

Professionally trained as a Feldenkrais® Practitioner, an Embodied Life Teacher, a Work That Reconnects Facilitator, and a Community Grief Ritualist, over the past 30 years, she’s been trained in many somatics lineages, in the Tibetan Buddhist traditions of Dzogchen and Lojong, as well as being engaged in ongoing deep mentorship in soul work, deep ecology, systems thinking, and the mythopoetic.

She is dedicated to ripening mature human beings, restoring nature & culture, and stewarding Refugia. She is a meditator, an animist, a lover of poetry, a convener of soulful community, a home herbalist, a beekeeper, and is devoted to this wild Earth. Erin is currently at work on her first book. Along with her husband, Carl, she hosts the Embodiment Matters Podcast. They live in Salt Lake City, Utah, with their 15-year-old son, many wily animals, and a wild permaculture garden.
