"One of the most central and helpful teachings of the Buddha is called Dependent Origination or Interdependent Co-Arising. It is at the core of the Buddha’s teaching because it helps us to see when we are being triggered by certain catalysts in our lives and moving into reactivity and the illusion of a separate self. We are all on a path to liberation from suffering and healing and yet we do at times react to our thoughts and emotions in such a way that we cause pain to ourselves, others and to the earth.
Dependent origination helps us to see step-by-step how we move into the illusion of separation that is fueled by our fears and reactivity. While the “chain of dependent origination” has twelve links, we will focus on the portion of the chain that relates speci'cally to our practice. In this way our work with this precious teaching isn’t just an intellectual understanding but more grounded in our moment-to-moment experience as we see it unfold increasingly clearly in our lives.
One of my Thai teachers, Ajahn Buddhadasa, placed great emphasis on dependent origination and I have spent many years practicing with it. It is with great joy that I share this teaching with you as many people over the centuries have seen through the illusion of a separate self and have found freedom through this practice. Our day together will include dharma discussion, meditation and chanting." - John Orr
