Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated chronic medical conditions in the United States—yet dentists are uniquely positioned to identify and help manage it. Current estimates suggest that up to 80% of individuals with moderate to severe OSA remain undiagnosed, exposing patients to significantly increased risks of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, cognitive impairment, motor vehicle accidents, and reduced quality of life when left untreated.This 2-day (16-hour) evidence-based didactic and hands-on course is designed specifically for general dentists who want to confidently and responsibly incorporate OSA screening and oral appliance therapy into everyday clinical practice. Participants will learn to recognize risk factors during routine dental visits, implement validated screening tools, understand sleep-testing pathways, and deliver effective, evidence-based oral appliance therapy in collaboration with sleep physicians.
The course integrates scientific foundations, clinical protocols, and hands-on appliance training, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, interdisciplinary care, and outcomes-driven treatment, enabling dentists to become an essential part of their patients’ overall health care team.
Two experienced clinicians lead instruction, with decades of combined experience in dental sleep medicine; both are co-authors of a published textbook on dental sleep management. Their expertise clarifies complex topics and provides practical insights derived from years of clinical practice, teaching, and collaboration with medical sleep professionals.
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to identify patients at risk for OSA, initiate appropriate referrals, and provide oral appliance therapy that meets current standards of care—ultimately improving patient health outcomes while expanding the scope and impact of the general dental practice.
