About Peter Daniels
I have been teaching, presenting, training, and officiating traditional games since the 1990s, sharing these rich cultural practices across the circumpolar world. My work has taken me to international events, including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the 2015 Pan-Am Games in Toronto, and multiple Winterlude festivals in Ottawa, where I have had the honour of delivering interactive demonstrations and presentations.
Since the early 2000s, I have served as an official for the Dene Games at the Arctic Winter Games and have held the role of Head Official since 2008. In these roles, I have upheld the integrity of the games while celebrating their cultural significance.
My interactive presentations incorporate teaching the history and cultural context behind each game, demonstrating their techniques, and encouraging audience participation. I believe traditional games are a powerful way to build community, promote cultural understanding, and boost self-esteem among participants.
About the Indigenous Place Making program
During February, the Place Keeping program will feature workshops, performances and an artist talk on the first three Wednesdays during the noon hour. The artwork of five Indigenous artists will also be displayed digitally throughout the month. Learn more about the other events here.
This event is part of The City of Calgary's Indigenous Place Keeping program through Public Art that features Indigenous educational programming, workshops, and art by Indigenous artists. Hosted in the Municipal Building—a hub where Calgarians conduct business and Council makes decisions—it highlights the importance of Indigenous voices in our shared spaces.
