Delaware County Barns: Our History LIves

Dick Leavy and Judy Hammel, along with three barn owner/panelists, will present the following topics:

I. The barn survey project: Why it is important to preserve information about barns, how we are doing the survey, our current list and choice of selected barns for visits, and what a visit entails--- photos, Friends of Ohio Barns assessment, stories

II. How to “read” a barn: Architectural features, barn design related to ethnicity, era, function. A slide show will cover entry design (Yankee vs. transverse), ground and bank barns, roof design and why roofs changed from gable to gambrel, and timbers and saw marks

III. Examples of barns with interesting histories (Panel of three barn owners)

a. Cook Family barn in Harlem Twp (Diane and Mike Kabler)

b. Price/Hodges barns in Radnor Township(Tom Price)

c. Kaelber barns in Troy and Marlboro Townships (Dennis Kaelber)

IV. Accomplishments and plans for survey: Archived for research at Cryder, photo book with publication by September, 2026, and potential for future presentations or workshops.
