Deep Dive Lectures - "Where the Odyssey's Monsters Came From”

Deep Dive is a new series of lecture nights in Barcelona: we borrow a bar, bring in someone who really knows their subject, and let them talk about it in English.

​A one-eyed giant. A woman who turns men into pigs. Something in the water that eats sailors.

​People have been telling these stories for three thousand years, and for almost as long others have been asking the obvious question: okay, but what was it really?
The Greeks had answers, the Romans had different ones, and everyone since has had a go, right up to the film that's in cinemas now. Some of those answers are clever, some are ridiculous, one or two might even be right.

​Ariadna is a classicist, and this is what she actually works on: not what the Odyssey means, but what happens to these stories over time and who keeps rewriting the monsters. She'll take a few of them and follow them all the way back.

​You don't need to have read the Odyssey or seen the film to follow the lecture. And if you've just come out of the cinema, you'll leave knowing which bits of what you watched people have been arguing about for two thousand years.

​The talk runs about 50 minutes, followed by open Q&A and time to chat with Ariadna and the rest of the room after.
