There are perhaps more impressive forts in the vast historical landscape of Delhi but "Purana Quilla-Old Fort" is the one site in our city which boasts a continuous cultural deposit from pre-Mauryan to the Mughal period and thereafter!
Many a historian & chronicler including Mughal-era historians have suggested that this was the hallowed site of "Indraprastha" and today there are many for whom the idea of the fabled city of Mahabharata is surely embedded in the soil of the Purana Qila.
Painted Grey Ware pottery excavated here dating back to the 3rd Century BCE allude to a glorious period of grand empires & civilization. This fort citadel also has been witness to the humble beginnings of the Mughal Dynasty as well as the dramatic moments of their almost-decimation before they could make a stronghold in India!
The importance of the site was further emphasized by the choice of the English who aligned the central axis of their new Imperial capital of British India, New Delhi with this fort.
Old Fort or Purana Quilla the citadel palace inside the fortified city of "Deenpanah" the 6th city of Delhi was constructed by the 2nd Mughal emperor Humayun and later built upon by the Afghan chieftain Sher Shah Suri after he banished Humayun from Hindustan. "Shergarh" as Suri called it eventually also saw the revival of the Mughal fortunes!
