Dedication Ceremony: Memorial Headstone for James M. Wells, Millville’s First Mayor

James M. Wells was Millville’s first mayor, elected in 1866, the same year Millville became a city. That same year he founded Mount Pleasant Cemetery and served as its first superintendent and later its president. As far as anyone has been able to determine, his grave has never been marked.
That changes this September.
Join us at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Thursday, September 3rd at 4pm, the anniversary of Wells’s death, for the dedication of his memorial headstone. Mayor Dan Dixon will speak. Everyone is welcome.
The stone was donated by Bob Francois, former president of the Millville Historical Society. The project is being carried out in partnership with Bobby Nuskey, President of the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association, who is covering the foundation.
2026 marks 160 years since Millville became a city, 160 years since Mount Pleasant Cemetery was founded, and 250 years since the founding of the United States.
Free and open to the public.
