About this Event

This event will include a behind the scenes tour of IIT’s College of Architecture Fabrication Center and the Deconstruction/Reconstruction Lab.

The Deconstruction/Reconstruction Lab (Decon/Recon Lab) is a design research program focused on investigating new sustainable ways of thinking that promote the transition from a linear economy (take, make, throw) to that of a circular economy (take, make, repeat). With emphasis on computational design, advanced robotic manufacturing, and emerging technologies, the Decon/Recon Lab seeks to rethink the way we manage and reuse building materials, through avoiding carbon and energy intensive processes of recycling and remanufacturing or, worse, the landfill.

The Decon/Recon Lab is directed by Assistant Professor Dillon Pranger.

Located in the first building completed by Mies van der Rohe on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, the Architecture Fabrication Center comprises more than 14,000 square feet of high-bay research and construction facilities, a space like no other on an American college campus. With an exhaustive complement of digital and analog tools —including seven laser cutters, two 4x8 CNC mills, fourteen 3D printers, seven large format sawstop table saws, 2 multi-ton gantry cranes and more—students have the capability of building prototypes, models, and full-scale mock-ups of construction details to study material properties and advanced fabrication methods.

The Architecture Fabrication Center is managed by 4 professionally trained staff members (2 full-time and 2 part-time) with expertise in woodworking, carpentry, metalworking, ceramics, and digital fabrication, including large format laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC machining.
