During this fifth edition of the Dear Shapes in Space performance show, more than 15 performance artists will share their visions of the future through performance. There will be durational performances happening throughout the evening, allowing you to dive into rituals and auditory experiences.
For this year’s Dear Shapes, the starting point was the book Earth Emotions (2019) by eco-philosopher Glenn Albrecht. The performers were invited to share their visions of the future—approximately 50 years from now—through performance art. They'll do so critically, poetically, softly, harshly, and in interactive and personal ways, all while being strongly engaged with their longings for the future.
"The power of art to shape the future as we wish it to be is immense: art has the ability to outline what is still uncertain and make it experienceable, serving as the first step in its realization. Performance art is experiential art that immerses you completely in worlds that do not yet exist, unlike what’s possible to experience in any other art medium, and is therefore a highly relevant, creative, and powerful activist tool," explains curator Jessica van Deursen.
Performers: Ni Wayan Cynthia, Yair Callender & Işıl Ercanlı, Nino den Hartog & team, Daauwe van Huizen, Toine Klaassen & Joey Schrauwen, सूर्य & دَاوُود , Louis Nurcombe, Lio Spinnewijn & team, Berendine Venemans.
On November 30, the performance art event "Dear Shapes in Space" will be showcased in Nijmegen for the first time. This special event marks POPOP's very first Performance Night in the city. The performance artists from across the Netherlands will simultaneously present their vision for the future in this two-hour-long performance 'opera.' The Performance Night will take place in and around the St. Jacob's Chapel and the historic building of the International Drawing Center, located at Papengas 6 in Nijmegen.
The event is presented by POPOP and curated by performance artist Jessica van Deursen.
The venue is partly wheelchair accessible. The accessible area's are the ground floor and the outside area. The chapel and upper floor are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
With great thanks to our supporting parties: Gemeente Nijmegen, Het Cultuurfonds and the International Drawing Center.
