Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally reshaped debates about the future of Germany’s traditional Eastern policy, known as Ostpolitik.
In this lecture, Ian Klinke will examine whether the war in Ukraine has caused lasting damage to Ostpolitik by revisiting its geopolitical foundations and tracing its gradual decline over the past decade. The talk will explore how German politics and society navigate the tensions between Atlanticism, Ostpolitik, and Geopolitik in today’s rapidly changing security environment.
Ian Klinke is Associate Professor in Human Geography at the University of Oxford and a fellow of St John’s College. His research focuses on the history of geopolitics from the late nineteenth century to the present.
In 2023, he was awarded a British Academy mid-career fellowship, and in 2023–2024 he served as a visiting researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen.
