Trying to recover her self-worth after surviving the car crash that killed her son, Rae (Nicole Kidman) and husband John Ingram (Sam Neill) set sail on a remote ocean voyage in search of healing. Their paradise is shattered when they rescue a lone castaway (Billy Zane); the only survivor from a damaged schooner and a terrifying realisation that help is impossibly far away.
Directed by Phillip Noyce, Dead Calm strips the thriller down to its essentials: three characters, two boats and an endless expanse of sea. Shot on location at Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef by Australian cinematographer Dean Semler (Dance with Wolves, Mad Max 2) the film’s suspense is helped by a synthesizer driven film score composed and performed by New Zealander, Graeme Revell. Produced by George Miller and with a screenplay by Terry Hayes, Nicole Kidman’s breakthrough performance launched her international career. The film won four AFI (AACTA) Awards including Best Film, Best Editing, Best Screenplay and Best Sound.
