About this Event
"Your words, the human speech
is unknown to me. There are birds,
who are fleeing with broken heart
under the sky, under the fiery sky.
Orphan wood slats stand in the searing field,
and motionless cages burn high.
I do not understand human speech,
and do not speak your language."
János Pilinszky : Apocryph
The performance is inspired by Wim Wenders’s film Wings of Desire. It follows two angels wandering through a great city, observing everyday life in its greyness, a world stripped of sacred meaning.
The dramaturgical arc of the production unfolds through four poetic angels and their visions of the city. Excerpts from poems by Zita Izsó, János Pilinszky, Géza Röhrig, and Krisztina Tóth form the backbone of the dramaturgy. In contrast to the materialism of the imagined city, the performance features religious Renaissance motets, performed live by the Hangzó Konzort.
Metropolitan Icons traces, through movement, the journey of these angels: the discovery of their own human bodies and surroundings, followed by their conscious acceptance of integration into society.
Music, movement, and literature intertwine over the course of 50 minutes.
