This month we’ll be featurin’ Reggae, Rocksteady and Ska as ever, but with an inclination towards jazzy beats as we’re part of the London Jazz Festival. In celebration of this association we’re presenting you with an extended 8 hour extravaganza. We're stoked that the legendary Jerry Dammers will be spinning for us during the early evening. The founder of The Specials and the 2 Tone Records label, Jerry's illustrious career, has included writing many great tunes, including "Ghost Town" and "Free Nelson Mandela". Always progressing, recent years have seen Jerry at the helm of the august, Sun Ra infused, Spacial A.K.A.. Mr Dammers promises a, “personal Jamaican Jazz inclined selection.”Early on, the afternoon will commence with a warm up selection from Mr.Wax. Waxy will be succeeded by Francesco the operator of the august SoulRockers Soundsystem, our Italian special guest. He'll be followed by Vandorta; she’ll be familiar to anybody that frequents Sounds of the Universe and has performed here before at the D.D.C. and as part of the Soul Jazz Soundsystem. The vibrant Annabelle exudes positive vibes and can be relied upon to grace us with a scintillating Jamaican jazz set, presented with style.Following Jerry we’re really looking forward to welcoming DJ Riot Girl for her first set at the D.D.C.. She’s resident DJ at Ronnie Scott’s world famous Jazz Club in Frith Street Soho. Aswell as supporting some of the very biggest names in jazz, Riot Girl knows how to rock a crowd. She promises a set blending Jamaican beats with her fluent knowledge of the Jazz cannon and floor fillers.
Following Riot Girl there will be more of the semi-live action for which the Club is known. Soft Wax will be spinnin’ the rhythms. On the mic there will be singjay action, live and direct, from the mighty Doc Murdoch. There will also be live instrumentation from our fresh, new, Horn Section, led by Natty and featuring special guest Michael. There’ll be extra special guest vocalists too. We’re also looking forward to another blinding session from the great Prince Fatty on the desk, throughout the event.
Stretching back to the likes of Lord Lebby, Jamaican music has had a long and intimate relationship with Jazz. This one-away, special session will celebrate that relationship, whilst conforming to people’s expectations of a skanking good time, every time, at the D.D.C.. We’ve put together an expert line-up to explore this dimension of the music of Jamaica, whilst providing you with a great opportunity to put on your dancing shoes and surrender to the rhythm. We expect this whole day to be one of our most memorable, come on down and celebrate Jamaica’s Hep Cats.
