About this Event

Workplace concerns require HR professionals and organizational leaders to respond promptly, objectively, consistently, and with appropriate sensitivity. Whether the issue involves harassment, discrimination, retaliation, workplace conduct, policy violations, safety concerns, substance use, conflicts of interest, or other employee relations matters, a well-managed investigation is critical to establishing facts, supporting sound decision-making, and reducing organizational risk.

This practical program provides participants with a structured approach for conducting effective workplace investigations. Participants will explore how to assess an initial complaint or concern, determine the appropriate scope and investigation process, gather and evaluate relevant information, conduct effective interviews, document findings, and communicate appropriately with those involved.

The program will also address investigator neutrality and credibility, confidentiality and information-sharing considerations, documentation practices, and the importance of reaching conclusions based on the information and evidence gathered rather than assumptions. Participants will leave with practical tools and considerations they can apply when responding to workplace complaints and conducting internal investigations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate initial steps when receiving a workplace complaint, allegation, or report.
  • Assess the nature and scope of a workplace concern and determine an appropriate investigation approach.
  • Plan and conduct effective interviews of complainants, respondents, and witnesses.
  • Gather, document, organize, and evaluate relevant information and evidence objectively.
  • Apply appropriate practices for confidentiality, neutrality, consistency, and employee communication throughout the investigation process.
  • Distinguish facts and evidence from assumptions, opinions, and unsupported conclusions.
  • Document investigation findings in a clear, factual, and defensible manner.
  • Identify appropriate follow-up steps and communicate investigation outcomes while protecting sensitive information and minimizing organizational risk.
