Days and Nights in the Forest (Aranyer Din Ratri) is a Bengali gem by the legendary director Satyajit Ray. Based on a novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay, Ray’s adaptation offers a nuanced and introspective portrayal of post-colonial urban India. Through the lens of four young men seeking a temporary escape in the forests of Palamau, the film subtly unravels the complexities of class-consciousness, gender relations, and the enduring weight of tradition in a rapidly changing society. Long unseen and difficult to access, the film was restored in 4K in 2025 by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and the Film Heritage Foundation.*DCP courtesy of Janus Films.
