Dana Abel is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who contributes the sweet sounds of her voice, piano and accordion to Daydream Derby. As a founding member of the acoustic Americana band Misty River, Abel performed over 400 concerts throughout the United States, China and Canada, recorded five albums and was featured multiple times on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s program Oregon Art Beat. Abel is the former executive director of the Oregon Children’s Choir, and currently teaches ukulele, guitar, voice and piano at her studio in Eugene, Oregon.
John Heller began playing guitar at the young age of ten, eventually moving to the stage and the studio continuing for over forty years. He spent most of his early adult years touring up and down the west coast I-5 corridor. At home in the studio, he is a founding member and produced albums for Awkward Blue, Alien Agent and Soul Deception. Skilled at songwriting, score composing, and audio engineering, he has lent his talents to many projects over the years. He now brings his bass playing to Daydream Derby to enhance their fun and fresh performances.
Nicole Lawless began her musical journey at age 4, when she taught herself how to read music and play a kiddie organ. Following that initial spark of making music, and her mother’s singing example, she learned to sing harmonies on her own at age 8! Then she played more instruments: flute, trumpet, piano, French horn, guitar – she’d play anything she could get her hands on, even her sister’s saxophone! Later, she learned to play trombone and then finally an assortment of concert percussion instruments during post-Baccalaureate work in music education at the UO. Although her career path of becoming a choir director shifted after starting a family (she became an office manager/bookkeeper), Nicole continued to find musical partners with whom to create sonic joy. She was thrilled to join Daydream Derby – being able to sing and play with such talented musicians and wonderful humans is truly being in her happiest place.
Jesse Springer has been in love with music ever since he first heard a Beatles song on his parents’ record player, at age two. It wouldn’t be until his 50th birthday that he realized the rock and roll fantasy of playing guitar and singing for an audience. Between those ages, he played saxophone in the fifth grade, had one formal guitar lesson, and took a bunch of music theory classes. One of the main skills he learned during that period is how to surround himself with incredibly talented musicians who allow him to float on his musical dream. Prior to rock and roll stardom, Jesse drew political cartoons for 27 years. While he isn’t playing music, he owns and operates the graphic design business Springer Design & Illustration.
