The Senator Jeanne Lucas Week of Events is a week-long commemoration honoring the life, legacy, and public service of North Carolina Senator Jeanne Hopkins Lucas.
Senator Lucas was a member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and the first Black woman elected to the North Carolina State Senate, serving with distinction from 1993 until her passing in 2007. Known affectionately as “Queen Jeanne,” she championed education, children, senior citizens, and health care for underserved communities.
Hosted by the Durham Section NCNW, the NCCU Political Science Club, Tri Beta Biology Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, and C.A. Jones History Club, the week will blend education, culture, civic engagement, and intergenerational storytelling to celebrate Senator Lucas’ enduring impact on Durham, North Carolina, and beyond.

Civic Enagement Education Panel and Q&A - 5:00 - 6:00 PM
- This panel will feature 5 prominent civic and community leaders who discuss making an impact on your community through voting, activism, and civic engagement.
- Dr. Lydia Lindsey: NCCU History Professor
- Khadija McNair: African American Heritage Commission at the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources
- Callen Herbet: NCCU director for the Office of Community Engagement and Service (OCES).
