In the mid-to late 1800's, when Northeast Georgia was first being settled, community sawmills and gristmills were vital to progress and development. Sawmills provided lumber for building homes, barns and commercial buildings, while gristmills ground grain into flour, meal and feed. These mills not only met the basic needs of settlers but also fostered community and economic growth. They often served as gathering places for trade, socializing, and sharing news. Some mills even became the location of the first post offices. While some mills operated as both a sawmill and a gristmill, this presentation will focus on the early logging operations and sawmills of White County.
