David Dondero is an American songwriter, musician, and novelist whose work bridges the grit of punk with the narrative depth of folk storytelling. Emerging from the DIY punk scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s, he first made his mark fronting the band Sunbrain and later as a drummer for the political folk-punk group This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb. As a solo artist, Dondero has released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including The Transient, Filter Bubble Blues, and Immersion Therapy, blending wry observation, vivid imagery, and emotional candor. His songwriting, marked by poetic realism and a troubadour’s wanderlust, has earned comparisons to the great American songwriters while remaining distinctly his own voice.In addition to his music, Dondero is the author of Chaos the Cat, a novel set against California’s cannabis legalization era and narrated by a reincarnated cat. The book showcases his gift for blending humor, social commentary, and unconventional perspectives, much like his songs. Whether on the page or the stage, Dondero captures the restless search for meaning in a changing world, drawing from decades of travel, performance, and lived experience.
