King University’s Faith and Culture Speaker Series welcomes Dr. David Bebbington, emeritus professor of history at the University of Stirling in Scotland, for two public presentations on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026: “The History of the Evangelical Movement” and “Evangelical Preaching in North America in the Late Twentieth Century.”
Although “evangelicalism” has become a volatile word in the present context, it also describes an important historical movement that has played a vital role in shaping contemporary American culture. In his first presentation, Bebbington will place the movement in historical perspective, examining its influence in public life and ordinary daily experience. His second presentation will focus on evangelical preaching in North America in the late twentieth century.
Bebbington is one of the leading and most widely published scholars of evangelicalism in both the United Kingdom and the United States. His scholarship has addressed the movement across political, religious and social settings, with particular attention to British Prime Minister William Gladstone.
An emeritus professor of history at the University of Stirling and Baylor University, Bebbington has made major contributions to the study of evangelical history. He also served as doctoral supervisor to King University President Andy Tooley.
His visit offers the Bristol community an opportunity to consider how a historically important movement developed, how it has operated in places of power, how it has shaped everyday religious and cultural life, and how evangelical preaching developed in North America during the late twentieth century.
