The new aesthetic format spread like wild fire across popular culture and still present, has reemerged everywhere again as virally linked to new generative Ai images, as weird, eerie and the strange. On the one hand, the popular success of surrealist aesthetics changed popular attitudes to photography, but on the other, what do have they to do with surrealist photography?
David Bate is a scholar, writer and photographer working in the visual arts. His interests relate to the critical history, theory and practice of the photographic arts, including avant-garde history, postcolonial critiques and theories of the image. His writings on the history, theory and practice of photography are widely disseminated and his own visual work is published and exhibited internationally. He is Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster and co-editor of the photography journal Photographies. His books include Photography and Surrealism: Sexuality, Colonialism and Social Dissent (IB Tauris, 2004), Photography The Key Concepts (Berg, 2009), Art Photography (Tate Publishing, 2015) and Photography After Postmodernism (Routledge, 2022).
