With 14 albums to his credit, Dave Gunning is a luminary in Canadian folk music. His journey, deeply inspired by legends like Stan Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot, showcases his talent for blending melodic sincerity with compelling storytelling. Gunning's music often highlights underdogs and tackles significant social and environmental issues, earning him widespread acclaim.
Over his career, Gunning has received ten East Coast Music Awards, two Canadian Folk Music Awards, four Music Nova Scotia Awards, and a Juno Award nomination. His ability to blend humor with poignancy makes his performances unforgettable, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere for his audience.
In 2022, Gunning released The Same Storm, an album written and recorded during the pandemic, continuing his tradition of celebrating everyday moments and giving voice to the overlooked. Almost 25 years ago, six dynamic solo performers came together for a late-night session during Celtic Colours. That session was the spark that lit Beòlach.
During the next decade, Beòlach continued to grow artistically through their innovative and exciting arrangements of traditional Cape Breton, Scottish and Irish tunes for fiddle, bagpipes, piano and guitar. Their knowledge and passion for this traditional music shows in their energy onstage alongside the natural, easy wit and banter they exchange reflects lifelong friendships, a shared sense of fun and years of experience as professional musicians.
Wendy MacIsaac (fiddle, piano, stepdance), Mac Morin (piano, stepdance, accordion) and Màiri Rankin (fiddle, stepdance), the three remaining original members, will bring music from the band as well as music they have been working on as a trio. Their solo and collective contributions to traditional music are a creative force from Cape Breton Island.
