We're kicking off our Hot Jazz Fall Show and Dance season with Dave Greer's Classic Jazz Stompers from Dayton, for our September show - Sunday, September 6th from 2:30p-5p at The Clintonville Woman's Club - 3951 N High Street, Columbus
The band was founded in 1981, the same year as COHJS, and shares with us a passion to be "keepers of the flame" for traditional jazz music of the 1920's and 30's. They are one of the best trad jazz bands currently playing, and we're lucky to have them so "close to home" to play frequently for us here!
In recent years the band has gained an enthusiastic following from a new generation of vintage swing dancers. In fact the band thoroughly enjoys playing for dancers and gets invited to play for many swing dance events. They even released a few albums of music specifically tailored for dancing, such as the aptly named release titled "Dance off both your shoes." The promo notes for this album invite purchasers to "hear (or dance to) the blissful experience of classic jazz played by musicians unsponsored... and alive in an interpersonal polyphonic relationship." You can check that out in person on September 6th performing for us "live and local!"
The band has a unique focus among trad jazz bands. The band's write up for a Grugelfest program described it well: the band is inspired by "the moment in the late 1920s and early 1930s when classic jazz evolved into small-band swing. The front line remained intact, while the driving rhythm of tuba and banjo was lightened by the substitution of guitar and string bass. Unhampered by horn sections or written arrangements of big band jazz, the music let lead players explore their own creativity with the support of a 'modern' rhythm section, looking backward with an affectionate smile and forward with an appreciative glance."
The Band: Front LIne is Erik Greiffenhagen, Reeds; Chris Moore, Cornet; Vaughn Wiester, Trombone. The rhythm section is Dave Greer, Band Leader, Banjo + Tenor guitar; Chris Berg, String Bass; Brien Cashwell, Piano; and Jim Leslie, on Drums.
"NOTE: there will be no food concessions at the show. Feel free to BYOB and bring your own snacks. There will be coffee, tea, lemonade, and water provided."
