Tomoyoshi Date and Stijn Hüwels met for the first time in 2015 in Tokyo, introduced to each other by Chihei Hatakeyama. That same evening, they recorded what would later become Hochu-Ekki-Tou, their first album, released on Home Normal in 2019.
They teamed up again in 2020 for Tōki hi, Tōki kumo, their second album, which was released in 2021 on Laaps. Now, both artists will meet again in person in Berlin for the first time since 2015. They will do a two-day residency, starting with a studio session on November 14th, followed by a concert on November 15th.
Tomoyoshi Date creates acoustic and organic sounds with a subtle touch of digital processing. He began making electronic music in 1998. In 2003, he formed the group Opitope with Chihei Hatakeyama (released by SPEKK), in 2012 the group ILLUHA with Corey Fuller (released by 12k), and the group Melodia with Federico Durand (Home Normal). His solo albums were released by Flyrec (2009, Japan) and Own Records (2011, Luxembourg). Tomoyoshi also worked as an emergency doctor until 2014 and started his ambient oriental medical clinic, "Tsuyukusa Clinic," in Tokyo that same year. He currently resides in Narita, near Tokyo.
Stijn Hüwels has a profound fascination for minimalism, mainly using layers of processed guitar and field recordings. Last year, he was invited by Tomoyoshi to contribute to Micro Ambient Music, a tribute compilation for the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. Stijn's visual work is used for various covers of releases by different artists on Home Normal. He lives and works in Leuven and Brussels, Belgium.
