Downtown Steubenville closes a block of Fourth Street on Friday, August 28, and for three hours it belongs to couples.

Date Night in Steubenville is a monthly street dance and pop-up restaurant held out front of the Steubenville Grocery Box. Matt Hill and the Classics play live, the street is the dance floor, and dinner comes from a different chef every month. It has become one of the better answers to the question of what to do downtown on a summer evening, and the whole Ohio Valley is invited to make the short drive.

The pop-up restaurant

The food is a real part of the night, not an afterthought. Each Date Night brings in its own chef with a menu built for that evening only, so dinner is never the same twice and never comes back. July's chef was Ron Carr, recently arrived in Steubenville, who served grilled swordfish with a summer vegetable caponata alongside options for anyone who does not eat fish. August's chef and menu will be announced shortly, along with the beer and wine list. Seating is available both indoors and outside, so you can take a table with a view of the dancing or eat out in the middle of it.

The music

Matt Hill and the Classics play cocktail jazz, New Orleans brass, Motown, funk, rhythm and blues, and classic soul. Early in the evening the music sits back and lets people eat and talk. Later it opens up, and that is when the street fills. Bandleader Matt Hill has performed for Fortune 500 companies and shared the stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists including The Impressions and Little Anthony.

No experience needed

A free dance lesson from Steubenville Swing is included with every ticket. You do not need a partner and you do not need to have danced before. In July, most of the people on the street started the evening saying they could not dance.

Admission

Ten dollars per person, which includes your first beverage, the live music, and the dance lesson. Chef-prepared dinner and the full beer and wine list are available separately. Tickets can be purchased online, or in person at the Steubenville Grocery Box counter with no service fee.

Parking

Free street parking is available nearby. The closed section of Fourth Street is a short walk from anywhere you leave the car, and everything happens within about a hundred feet once you get there.

Downtown Steubenville is an easy drive from Weirton, Wintersville, Wheeling, and the Pittsburgh suburbs.
