About this Event

Hi!

Databases are everywhere — but understanding how they really work is what separates good systems from great ones.

Join us at the next DevClub.lv meetup for an evening dedicated to modern database engineering. Learn how to read PostgreSQL execution plans, discover what's new in MySQL 9.7, and see real-world MySQL corruption troubleshooting and recovery techniques from production environments.

You are welcome to Database focused event on June 18, 18:30, at Accenture office – 214 Brīvības gatve.

Agenda for "Database" focused 154th DevClub.lv:

from will give a talk "MySQL Corruptions Troubleshooting: Case Studies".
This presentation is intended for beginners.

After years of work, every IT professional gains their own unique experience that can help them in the future.
Good old common sense, based on human intellect and time-proven methods, will save your time in the age of AI-driven technologies.
Using real-life cases, I will show how basic troubleshooting methods can save your time and how to avoid common pitfalls when unplanned issues arise.
Some corruption recovery techniques will be learned as well.
Case 1: Ubuntu + Zabbix upgrade failed due to problems with MySQL database. Logical data corruption while no issues with software upgrade .
Case 2: Zabbix MySQL database corruptions recovery after storage hardware issues.

Andrey Chervonets is DBA with 25+ years experience of supporting information systems based on Oracle products and technologies. He is Oracle Database OCP/OCE, Oracle AS/WebLogic OCP, IBM DB2 Certified Database Administrator.

will give a talk "EXPLAIN: make it make sense"

Most developers know how to measure the time a database query takes and to find which one is the slowest. But what next? What is going on there? Is it good that it’s doing that? Is the query supposed to take this much time? Will some indexes help? In this talk, I will help you decipher database query plans and give some rules of thumb to understand if the database is doing the best it can. We will also use query plans to find the best indexes for queries by observing what the database is looking for. I will also share several anti-patterns I have seen in projects and show how to rewrite them in a database-friendly way. Although I will use Python to explain the principles and execute my queries, I will show the raw SQL to make it applicable to any programming language.

from will give a talk titled “The Next Chapter of MySQL: What’s new in Versions 9.7”

Scott Stroz will deliver his speech ONLINE.

MySQL 9.7 LTS marks a major milestone for MySQL Community Edition, delivering expanded capabilities across observability, high availability, application development, and query performance. In this session, Scott explores the Community Edition features introduced in MySQL 9.7 LTS and what they mean for teams building and operating MySQL-backed systems. You will learn how new replication and Group Replication observability features provide better insight into lag, flow control, cluster health, and failover behavior; how OpenTelemetry support helps integrate MySQL into modern monitoring pipelines; how JSON Duality Views continue to evolve for application architectures; and how the Hypergraph Optimizer broadens access to advanced query planning in Community Edition.

This is not a product pitch. It is a practical look at what is now available in MySQL Community Edition, why these features matter, and how they can help teams build, scale, monitor, and optimize MySQL-backed applications with more confidence.

Scott Stroz is a Developer Advocate for MySQL and has been a full-stack developer for longer than the term "full-stack developer" has been around. In that time, MySQL was the only constant in his development stack. He is passionate about sharing what he has learned on his coding journey so others may learn from his mistakes.
