Curious about artificial intelligence, data, and technology? The Data Science Virtual Institute at Juniata College is a hands-on, three-day virtual experience designed specifically for high school students interested in exploring the fast-growing world of data science.
No prior experience is required — just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Participants will:
• Explore how data is collected, cleaned, and visualized
• Learn the basics of statistics and why they matter
• Try AI and machine learning concepts
• Learn natural language tools they can use right away
• Experience real-world environmental data projects
• Explore college and career pathways in data science
• Build skills for school, college, and future careers
• Earn a certificate to include on college applications and resumes
Program Schedule (12–3 p.m. EST daily)
Day 1 – Getting Started with Data Science
• Welcome and introductions
• How data science works: collecting, cleaning, and visualizing data
• Statistics for understanding data
Day 2 – AI, Careers & Tools You Can Use
• Career paths in data science and professional/student panel
• Data, AI, and machine learning
• Natural language tools
Day 3 – Real-World Data Applications
• Story maps: turning data into interactive visuals
• Predicting nature: trees and random forests with watershed data
• Wrap-up and next steps
