Data/Dev/Design Community of Practice: September
About this Event
ABOUT THIS SESSION
We'll have three interactive workshops. Bring your laptop depending on the session you want to attend:
(1) Developers — Vibe Coding for Social Good; no laptop needed. Guest session with Bishop Zareh, Vibe Code Austin. Vibe coding is easy to start and hard to trust. See the fix: a simple harness that keeps AI work on rails — stages, approval gates, and a paper trail — as one real project goes from idea to finished. Built for people who make media and move causes. Leave with the pattern.
(2) Designers — ResearchOps in the Age of AI; laptop encouraged. This is a hands-on ResearchOps session with Aslan French. Turn a messy civic problem into a plan you can act on. Learn a lightweight way to find the right question, figure out who to talk to, turn scattered notes into clear next steps, then use AI to generate a one-page research brief.
(3) Data Scientists — Pull Real City Data with Socrata; laptop required. This is a hands-on open-data session with Umberto (Beto) Fasci. Find a dataset on Austin’s open data portal, load it into a notebook with the Socrata API, and size up whether it can actually answer a real research question. Runs in your browser, aka leave with a working notebook.
ABOUT OPEN AUSTIN
Open Austin strengthens civic engagement by connecting builders, community members, and organizations to address Austin’s structural barriers by developing skills and co-creating data-informed solutions.
