This event forms part of The Data Lab's 10th Anniversary celebrations which will see us take our ever-popular Data & AI Meetup across Scotland throughout October and November.
Catch us at Abertay Cyberquarter in Dundee as we discuss some fantastic innovations and applications of data and AI!
In a city famous for the 3J’s of Jute, Jam and Journalism, we’re delighted to have Ema Sabljak from DC Thomson join us to discuss some of her fascinating work as a Data Journalist.
Departing from Dundee’s 3J’s we’ll also hear from Open Data Scotland’s Jack Gilmore on his work promoting and enabling better use of Open Data in Scotland, and Niamh Nic Daeid, Director at Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science will share her work in using computer vision data and virtual reality technology to recreate crime and fire scenes for forensic analysis.
After the presentations, we'll then move onto a panel discussion to discuss the varied career journey's of our speakers during a session full of tips and advice for anyone looking to work in data & AI!
Throughout the event there will be plenty of opportunities to network and connect with your local data and AI community as we showcase some of the fantastic work going on throughout the country.

Speaker bios:
Ema Sabljak, Data Journalist – DC Thomson
Ema moved from Croatia to Scotland in 2017 to study journalism and has lived in Glasgow since. After working as a live reporter for nearly four years, she joined the award-winning DC Thomson data team in 2023. The team most recently won the Best Data Visualisation award in for their high street tracking project WAN IFRA's Digital Media Awards Europe.
Professor Niamh Nic Daeid, Forensic Science and Director of the Leverhulme Research Centre
Professor Niamh Nic Daeid is an award winning Chartered Chemist and Authorised forensic scientist. She is a Professor of Forensic Science and Director of the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee, developing robust scientific methods and science communication for the justice systems. She has been involved in forensic science education, research and casework for over 30 years and is a past chair of the European working group for fire and explosion investigation and the INTERPOL forensic science managers symposium. She sits on the scientific advisory board of the International Criminal Court, is a strategic partner for the International Forensic Strategic Alliance and acts as an expert forensic advisor to the UN.
Jack Gilmore, Co-founder – Open Data Scotland
Jack Gilmore is a full stack software developer with experience of working in the public sector and academia in Scotland. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computing Science and Spanish from the University of Stirling in 2019. As an advocate of free and open-source software, many of the projects he has worked on either consume or produce open data. Most recently, he has been involved as the co-founder of the Open Data Scotland project, working on opendata.scot since 2021.
