Poster Image: It is twilight. There are trees in shadow on each side and a starry sky ahead and above. Colour and light flickering behind the trees. In the sky in script font are the words darkness, my old friend. In simple font are the words Solstice Dance Journey, befriending grief and gratitude on the dance floor. In the trees are the words come as you are and move how you feel.As grief bubbles up for many at this time of year sometimes it is good to make a point of spending time with it. Ask it to come around. Have a dance with it. All is welcome on the dance floor.
With grief on one arm and gratitude on the other, we will embrace the dark and lean into the coming light.

LOCATION: Since December has already been throwing a lot of winter at us we've decided to hold this dance inside. The indoor venue is 244 McMahon St.
The dance floor is a a lovely room inside the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship Building.
There are 5 steps up from the foyer to the room we will dance in.
There are universal washrooms available.
We dance on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe First Nations. I am grateful to those who took care of this land for centuries before me and acknowledge the atrocities colonialism has imparted on indigenous communities. I dance here respectfully and want to support indigenous sovereignty.
WHAT to expect on this night before the longest night:
- to meet each other in an opening circle
- a movement meditation to warm into our bodies, our feelings and the space.
- a personal, free form dance experience within community. Follow your own rhythm and what your body needs. Sit and listen, shake it out or find your flow. Come as you are, move how you feel, in a judgement-free, heart-centred space.
- a 90minute playlist that reflects the many layers of grief as well as the fun and pleasure of moving our bodies in dance. The music will range from slow and gentle to fast and heavy and upbeat.
-to meet together in a closing circle
-we will follow the guidelines for ecstatic dance which are:
No talking on the dance floor. We want to stay in our bodies as much as possible. We don't want to distract others or pull each other out of our own journey.
Interacting on the dance floor: If you'd like to interact with someone on the dance floor, be sure to get consent. A Yes looks like: Clear eye contact and a clear welcoming nod. A No looks like: A hand up in a stop gesture, or avoiding eye contact or turning away.
This dance is drug and alcohol-free.
We ask no photos are taken during the dance. Before or after the dance photos can be taken with consent.
