CURATORIAL STATEMENT
This exhibition explores the concept of “Outsider Art”. The term, coined by the British art historian Roger Cardinal, has its origins in Art Brut, or “raw art” introduced by the French artist Jean Dubuffet in 1945. Dubuffet used the term to describe art created by individuals existing outside the cultural mainstream, including psychiatric patients and those on the margins of society. Cardinal later broadened the definition to encompass artists working beyond formal art institutions and academic training.
The exhibition presents the work of Kailash Mani, an Indian American outsider artist and independent creator whose distinct identity is expressed through raw, unrestrained emotion. His aesthetic reflects a unique and distinctive artistic blend of ideas and form, reflecting the relationship between place and his experiences shaped by migration: from the United States to Thailand to India and to his decision to come back to Thailand.
This turning point has prompted a deep return to memory —through periods of darkness, loss, waiting, and inner struggle. In seeking renewal, he searches for hope and the possibility of new beginnings, while navigating the uncertainties of life. Darkest Before Dawn invites viewers to rediscover the compelling beauty of Outsider Art, while opening new perspectives on interpretation and common understanding amid the diversity of human societies.
นิทรรศการนี้หยิบยกประเด็น “ศิลปะนอกขนบ” หรือ “Outsider Art” คำนิยามที่ถือกำเนิดขึ้นในประเทศอังกฤษเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1972 โดยนักวิชาการชาวอังกฤษ Roger Cardinal ซึ่งได้ขยายขอบเขตแนวคิด Art Brut หรือ “ศิลปะนอกกรอบ” ที่ Jean Dubuffet ศิลปินชาวฝรั่งเศส บัญญัติขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1945 ภายหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง เพื่ออธิบายงานศิลปะของผู้ที่อยู่นอกสังคมกระแสหลัก อาทิ ผู้ป่วยจิตเวช หรือบุคคลชายขอบ ต่อมา Cardinal ได้ขยายนิยามดังกล่าวให้ครอบคลุมศิลปินนอกระบบสถาบันศิลปะอย่างเป็นทางการในวงกว้างยิ่งขึ้น

ภายในห้องจัดแสดงนำเสนอผลงานของ ไกรลาศ มณี ศิลปินและนักสร้างสรรค์นอกกระแส เชื้อสายอินเดีย–อเมริกัน ผู้มีอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว ถ่ายทอดอารมณ์อันดิบสด อิสระ และไร้ขอบเขต ผ่านกระบวนการทำงานที่ตกผลึกทั้งในด้านความคิด รูปแบบ และเทคนิค เพื่อสะท้อนความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพื้นที่และประสบการณ์การโยกย้ายถิ่นฐาน ตั้งแต่อินเดีย สหรัฐอเมริกา จนถึงการตัดสินใจชักชวนครอบครัวมาตั้งรกรากในประเทศไทย

จุดเปลี่ยนดังกล่าวนำพาให้เขาย้อนทบทวนความทรงจำ ท่ามกลางช่วงเวลาแห่งความมืดหม่น การสูญเสีย การรอคอย และการต่อสู้กับภายในจิตใจของตนเอง เขาจึงแสวงหาความหวังและความเป็นไปได้ของการเริ่มต้นใหม่ ดั่งเช่นผู้คนในสังคมที่ต่างเผชิญความท้าทายของชีวิต นิทรรศการ ก่อนจะถึงรุ่งสาง: Darkest Before Dawn ยังเชื้อเชิญผู้ชมให้หวนกลับมาค้นพบความงามอันน่าหลงใหลของศิลปะนอกขนบ พร้อมเปิดมุมมองใหม่ต่อการตีความ และการอยู่ร่วมกันท่ามกลางความแตกต่างของสังคมมนุษย์
Kailash Mani | Artist & Creative Practitioner
Born in 1984, United States.
Kailash Mani, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a visual artist currently living and working in Chiang Mai. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Boston University, training as an English teacher. As a mostly self-taught artist, he has developed a style distinct for its radical departure from conventional form and technique. His work reflects an interest in relationships, both interpersonal and with oneself, as well as universal concerns, such as fear, loss and hope. His first exhibition, at Sangdee Gallery, Chiang Mai, 2015 was entitled “Curious Countenances: Depictions of the Demure and the Deranged”, and his second, in 2019, was held in Woodstock School, Mussoorie, India in 2019. His most recent exhibition was at Urban Solace Cafe, in Bangalore, India, in 2023.

ไกรลาศ มณี เป็นศิลปินและนักสร้างสรรค์ชาวอินเดีย-อเมริกัน เกิดที่ เมืองฟิลาเดลเฟีย รัฐเพนซิลเวเนีย ปัจจุบันพำนักและทำงานในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เขาสำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโท จาก มหาวิทยาลัยบอสตัน และปริญญาตรี จากมหาวิทยาลัยเวอร์จิเนียคอมมอนเวลธ์, สหรัฐอเมริกา คณะศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต ด้านการสอนภาษาอังกฤษ ผลงานของเขาสะท้อนความสนใจในชีวิตประจำวันและความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้คน ผ่านการสำรวจมิติที่ลึกซึ้งและซับซ้อนของการดำรงอยู่ สร้างสรรค์จากจิตใต้สำนึกส่วนตัว และด้วยความที่ไม่ได้เรียนจบศิลปะโดยตรง ทำให้เขาไม่ถูกจำกัดด้วยรูปแบบหรือกรอบตายตัว งานของเขาจึงสะท้อนความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม ทั้งรากเหง้าความเป็นอินเดียที่สืบทอดผ่านสายเลือด ประสบการณ์การเติบโตในอเมริกา และการย้ายถิ่นฐานมาเมืองไทย ซึ่งมอบแรงบันดาลใจและประสบการณ์ใหม่ ๆ ที่หล่อหลอมแนวทางในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของเขา นิทรรศการ ที่ผ่านมาของเขา แสงดี แกลเลอรี เชียงใหม่ (2558), โรงเรียนวูดสต็อก เมืองมุสโซรี ประเทศอินเดีย (2562) และคาเฟ่เออร์บัน โซเลซ เมืองบังกาลอร์ ประเทศอินเดีย (2566)
