Event Description
Welcome to a difficult but necessary journey through Vienna’s past. This educational audio walk traces the darkest chapter of the city's history, exploring the sites of Nazi power, the persecution of the Jewish community, and the scars of World War II. Based strictly on historical facts, the tour moves from the story of Hitler’s early failures in Vienna to the devastating impact of his regime.
The route begins near the State Opera at the Monument Against War and Fascism. You will visit the Academy of Fine Arts, which rejected a young Adolf Hitler, and stand on Heldenplatz, where the masses cheered the annexation (Anschluss) of Austria in 1938. The journey continues past the Federal Chancellery and deep into the history of the Jewish community at the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial. The walk concludes at Morzinplatz, the site of the former Gestapo headquarters, where you will pay respects to the victims of political persecution.
Throughout the walk, the audio guide provides a factual narrative regarding the 65,000 murdered Viennese Jews and the dismantling of democracy. Please maintain a respectful demeanor at these sites of remembrance.
Explore this sensitive history your way with a self-guided audio tour available in English and German. Using your phone and headphones, follow the route at your own pace with clear navigation and historical context provided through the gAIdly app.
