DARK AND DRAMATIC
Dark and Dramatic is a portrait workshop centred on the creative use of low-key lighting to produce bold, atmospheric imagery. Blending elements of portraiture, movement, and editorial styling, this session explores how light and shadow can be used to shape mood, create depth, and draw attention to form. Rather than relying on elaborate sets or props, the emphasis is on using controlled lighting, expressive posing, and thoughtful composition to create images with impact.
Working in the studio, we'll explore a variety of low-key lighting setups, from sculptural side lighting to dramatic silhouettes and atmospheric scenes enhanced with haze. Andrew Merefield will demonstrate each setup, discussing light placement, shadow control, and posing techniques before photographers have plenty of time to shoot and experiment. Throughout the workshop, participants will be encouraged to refine their understanding of how subtle changes in lighting, body language, and composition can completely transform an image.
