Introductory lecture at 6:45 p.m In a dramatic scene from the 2001 film Hannibal, shot in Florence, Hannibal Lecter ( Sir Anthony Hopkins) and Police Inspector Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) encounter each other at the opera.
For this scene, director Ridley Scott and producers Dino and Martha De Laurentiis commissioned the writing of a new aria from composer Patrick Cassidy. The aria “Vide Cor Meum” has become a modern classic. Warner Classics has included it among the
“40 Most Beautiful Arias of All Time”.
Now, around this beloved aria, Patrick Cassidy has written an entire opera. The opera “Dante” tells of the immortal story of the great poet’s tragic love of Beatrice and his journey of redemption through Hell and Purgatory.
The opera will take audiences through the harrowing realms of the dead; and the depths and ecstasies of the heart. Taken from the events of La Vita Nuova and La Divina Commedia, the opera is sung entirely from Dante’s own words.
