Ligeti’s three books of Études pour piano (Piano Studies), written in the last two decades of his life, have been described as the ‘crowning achievement of his career and of the piano literature; though still new, they are already classics’.They also reflect Ligeti’s vast range of interests and influences, not only taking in centuries of Western classical music but folk and other traditions from around the world – from Indonesian gamelan to sub-Saharan African polyrhythms, and American jazz (especially Thelonius Monk and Bill Evans).
The result is music that is strikingly original yet immediately accessible, from driving rhythms to washes of impressionistic colour. Together, they convey joy and Ligeti’s own sense of wonder and imagination.
