The course will introduce students to the historical and social background of formal dance repertoires in Edinburgh during the Scottish Enlightenment (from the end of the 17th – to the beginning of the 19th century), as well as demonstrate some of the dance techniques used. The dancing will focus on country dances recorded in Scotland in the 18th century, including dance collections by David Young (1740) and A.B. Notebook (second half of the 18th century). The dances will be recreated based on period style and technical manuals. The course could be useful to country dance practitioners interested in the history of the style, dance enthusiasts and people interested in social history. The course will be accompanied by live music thanks to the Tasgadh grant funded by Creative Scotland.
The workshop is open to all. The dances will be walked through.
Partner is not required. There is a short tea break.
