Anatomy of a failed polar expedition
On 11 July 1897, the young photographer Nils Strindberg sets off on a scientific expedition to the Arctic led by Swedish engineer Salomon Auguste Andrée. Their mission? To fly over the North Pole in a hot air balloon to Canada or Russia, depending on where the wind would bring them. The explorers were waved off by excited politicians, international journalists and a brass band. Shortly after, all trace of them vanished – until thirty-three years later, when their bodies were found by chance in the ice of Kvitøya, the ‘White Island’, together with a box full of undeveloped film rolls …

Anatomie d’une funeste expédition polaire
Le 11 juillet 1897, le jeune photographe suédois Nils Strindberg prend part à une expédition scientifique dirigée par son compatriote, l’ingénieur Salomon Auguste Andrée. Celle-ci a pour mission de survoler le pôle Nord en montgolfière avant de rejoindre le Canada ou la Russie, selon les vents. Mais les membres de l’expédition disparaissent sans laisser la moindre trace. Trente-trois ans plus tard, leurs corps sont miraculeusement retrouvés sous la glace de Kvitøya, l’« île blanche », ainsi qu’un coffre rempli de pellicules non développées.

Anatomie van een gefaalde poolexpeditie
Op 11 juli 1897 vertrekt de jonge fotograaf Nils Strindberg mee op een wetenschappelijke poolexpeditie van de Zweedse ingenieur Salomon Auguste Andrée. De missie? Met een luchtballon de Noordpool overvliegen naar Canada of Rusland – afhankelijk van hoe de wind staat. De deelnemers worden uitgezwaaid door opgewekte politici, de internationale pers en een heuse fanfare, maar daarna ontbreekt elk spoor van hen. Tot 33 jaar later hun lichamen als bij toeval worden gevonden in het ijs van het “Witte Eiland” Kvitøya, samen met een kist vol onontwikkelde filmrollen...
