Ecstatic Dance NYC presents: Dance Medicine
✨ *Night of Expression and Dance at Alchemia Studio✨️
This special night will be a celebration of expression, dance, and community in a more intimate setting, designed to complement our larger monthly dances.
This week we have Anupriya as our ecstatic dance DJ along with Harriet Waghorn as our warm-up facilitator.
ABOUT
Anupriya
Originally from New Delhi, India where audiences only ever had ears for uptempo sounds, Anupriya is an electronic music DJ who had always wanted to play more downtempo, slow and ambient music for a room, but never found the space to do so. She went to her first Ecstatic Dance in Goa, and became excited to play one herself one day. This being the manifestation of her initial dream, she looks forward to curating an eclectic set with dub, jazz, ska, Asian underground, and ethnic downtempo music. As a deeply spiritual being, she hopes to communicate the sense of joy and freedom she gets from these sounds to the Sangha entrusting her on their movement journey.
She has previously played at venues like The Stonewall Inn, where she even had a brief residency, Jupiter Disco, Wonderville, Queen's Room and Red Eye.

As a pioneer in her hybrid movement language combining ballroom and contemporary dance her work exudes passion, sensuality and connectivity in movement, in 2022 she was nominated for the “Women in Dance Leadership Award” and in 2021 Harriet was awarded one of 3 prestigious places with Akram Khan Company for Artistic Development in choreography with her company EDIFICE (co-directed by Carmine De Amicis). Harriet works in theatre, TV, film and commercials, and has worked as a choreographer, mentor to artists such as Michaela Cole, Raff Law and Sadie Frost and with brands including Adidas and The Savoy, London. Harriet has trained in Motion Capture and studied Film Direction at NFTS.
Harriet is offering "Partnering and Touch" as a warm-up to start the evening. When we come into partnership with others to move, we are flowing between states of listening/receiving and guiding/offering. The brain can become busy when we dance with others and it can block our bodies sensitivity to hear. The aim is to open our connection so we can deeply listening, to learn some tools and to play. My dance practise involves different partnering techniques including contact improvisation, latin, ballroom and contemporary.
